The Tracing Initiative contains a collection of primary sources about visual artists of Iranian and Afghan descent since the middle of 20th century. This archive is not available online, but a basic search function is made available to confirm if an artist is included in the archive or not.
The intention for the Tracing Initiative is to update and maintain a collection of information on visual arts relating to Iran, Afghanistan and their diaspora and to make this information available for future scholarly research. The long-term aspiration is to have this collection entrusted to an establishment with a mandate in education and to secure the funding for its continued maintenance and access.
The framework for the collection in the Tracing Initiative is artists of Iranian and Afghani descent, born after 1900, working in the domain of visual arts. This includes painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and performance art.
The repository of the Tracing Initiative contains an exclusive storage area for each artist. Unrestricted by size, this enables media with the highest resolution and quality to be stored for each artist. Digital media in the form of text, images, video and audio files are saved in industry standard file types readable with standard viewers. If from time to time industry standards change, the material is converted to the new standard as part of the regular housekeeping, backup and maintenance process.
Copyright of material held in the repository of the Tracing Initiative belongs to their respective owners. The material held by the Tracing Initiative is for reference purposes. Any subsequent use of the material requires the explicit agreement of their respective copyright owner.
Certain material held in the repository of the Tracing Initiative may have a restrictive covenant. In such cases, access to this material may be restricted until a defined period in the future and/or the use of this material may be subject to certain conditions. The restrictive covenants are sometimes imposed by donors of primary documents as a condition of donating their archive to the Tracing Initiative.
